I Stopped Buying Dresses to Hide

For years, I didn't choose dresses because they were cute.
I chose them because they covered something.
My legs.
My arms.
Sometimes both.
If a dress was maxi length, even better. If it had three-quarter sleeves? Sold.
Not necessarily because I loved the style, but because it checked the boxes I thought it needed to check.
Would it hide my legs?
Would it cover my arms?
Would it make me look smaller?
Would it help me blend in?
Those were the questions guiding my shopping decisions.
What wasn't I asking?
Do I actually like it?
Looking back, it's amazing how much energy I spent trying to camouflage myself.
If my legs were covered, I felt okay.
If my arms were covered, I felt okay.
If both were covered, I felt safe.
But safe and stylish aren't always the same thing.
The problem wasn't that I wore maxi dresses or dresses with sleeves. I still love both.
The problem was that I wasn't choosing them because I loved them.
I was choosing them because I was afraid of the alternatives.
I wasn't dressing for joy.
I was dressing for protection.
Somewhere along the way, I convinced myself that every outfit needed to solve a problem.
And the problem was always my body.
Now when I shop, I try to ask a different question:
"Is it cute?"
That's it.
Not "Does it hide my legs?"
Not "Will it make my arms look smaller?"
Not "Is it flattering enough?"
Just:
"Do I like it?"
It's such a simple shift, but it has completely changed my wardrobe.
These days, you'll find me in shorter dresses.
Sleeveless dresses.
Bright dresses.
Flowy dresses.
Patterned dresses.
Dresses I never would have given a chance ten years ago.
Not because my body changed.
Because my mindset did.
I finally realized that my legs aren't a problem.
My arms aren't a problem.
My body isn't a problem.
It's just my body.
And it deserves clothes that bring me joy.
So yes, I still own maxi dresses.
And yes, I still love a good sleeve.
But now it's because I like the dress—not because I'm trying to hide behind it.
And honestly?
My dress-shopping criteria are much simpler these days.
Is it cute?
Is it comfortable?
Does it make me happy?
And perhaps the most important question of all:
Does it have pockets?
Because confidence is great, self-acceptance is beautiful, and personal growth is important.
But a cute dress with pockets?
That's true magic.
The older I get, the less interested I am in dressing to disappear.
I want dresses that make me smile.
Dresses that make me feel like myself.
Dresses that are fun.
And if they happen to have pockets big enough for my phone?
That's just a bonus.
