Maxi Skirt vs. Pencil Skirt

If you had asked me a few years ago what my favorite skirt style was, I wouldn't have hesitated.

Maxi skirt.

Long, flowy, comfortable, and most importantly, it covered everything I thought needed covering.

My legs? Covered.

My thighs? Covered.

My hips? Covered.

There was something comforting about a maxi skirt. It felt safe while still being cute, and as a plus-size woman trying to navigate fashion, that combination was hard to beat.

I owned several.

And honestly, I still love them.

There is nothing quite like the drama of a flowy skirt catching the breeze on a sunny day.

But lately?

I've been having a bit of a fashion identity crisis.

Because somewhere along the way, I fell in love with a pencil skirt.

Specifically, a brown textured pencil skirt that has absolutely no interest in hiding anything.

This skirt shows every lump. Every bump. Every curve.

Every part of the body I spent years trying to disguise.

And somehow?

It still looks amazing.

Maybe that's what surprised me most.

I spent so many years believing that fitted clothing was only for certain bodies.

That if I wore something close to my shape, I needed to be worried about whether my stomach showed.

Whether my hips looked too wide.

Whether people could tell I had a body.

Spoiler alert...People already knew.

The pencil skirt didn't reveal some shocking secret.

It just allowed me to stop pretending my body wasn't there.

And once I got over that mental hurdle, I realized something important.

A fitted skirt doesn't make me look worse.

It just makes me look like me.

The texture.

The silhouette.

The way it pairs with sweaters, blouses, and a cardigan.

The way it feels trendy without trying too hard.

I love all of it.

Now don't get me wrong.

I'm not breaking up with maxi skirts.

They'll always have a place in my closet.

Some days require flowy vibes and dramatic twirling potential.

Some days I want to feel like I'm wandering through a farmers market with an iced tea and absolutely nowhere to be.

That's maxi skirt territory.

But the pencil skirt has earned a permanent spot too.

What started as "maybe I'll try something different" quickly became "wait... why didn't anyone tell me I could wear this?"

Turns out I wasn't actually a maxi skirt girl.

I was a hiding-my-body girl.

There's a difference.

These days, I'm much more interested in clothes that make me feel confident than clothes that make me feel invisible.

And if that means showing a few lumps and bumps along the way?

So be it.

The skirt is still cute.
