Wide-Leg Pants vs. Skinny Jeans: Why I Finally Let Go of the Rules

Let's get one thing straight:
As a millennial, I will probably always own a pair of skinny jeans.
They survived the side-part debates, the Gen Z fashion critiques, and countless trend cycles. At this point, they're practically part of my personality.
But owning skinny jeans doesn't mean I'm restricted to them.
For years, I thought it did.
I was convinced that wide-leg pants were not for me. In my mind, they would make my legs look huge. I pictured myself looking like I had tree trunks for legs, and I refused to even consider trying them on.
The fashion "rules" I had learned as a plus-size woman told me that anything adding volume was automatically off-limits. The goal was always to create a slimmer silhouette, elongate the body, and avoid anything that might make me appear larger.
So I stuck to what felt safe.
Skinny jeans.
Leggings.
Anything fitted.
Anything that followed the shape of my body.
And while there's absolutely nothing wrong with those styles, I eventually realized something: I wasn't choosing them because I loved them. I was choosing them because I was afraid of the alternatives.
Then, over the last year, something changed.
I started experimenting.
I tried styles I normally would have ignored. I stopped asking whether something made me look smaller and started asking whether I liked it.
That's when wide-leg pants entered the chat.
And honestly?
It was a whole vibe.
Not only were they comfortable, but they were stylish, versatile, and gave me a completely different silhouette than I was used to seeing on myself. Instead of feeling self-conscious, I felt confident.
A huge part of that shift came from Liv at Qurves Boutique.
Sometimes all it takes is someone encouraging you to step outside your comfort zone. Liv has a way of helping women see possibilities instead of limitations. She encourages her customers to try new styles, challenge old beliefs, and wear clothes because they love them, not because they're following outdated fashion rules.
Without that encouragement, I probably would have walked right past wide-leg pants and never given them a chance.
Now they're a staple in my closet.
The funny thing is, wide-leg pants didn't change my body.
They changed my perspective.
They reminded me that so many of the fashion rules I followed weren't actually rules at all. They were fears disguised as advice.
Today, you'll still find me wearing skinny jeans from time to time. They're comfortable, familiar, and they'll always have a place in my wardrobe.
But now you'll also find me in wide-leg pants, flowy trousers, relaxed denim, and styles I once swore I'd never wear.
Because fashion is supposed to be fun.
It's supposed to evolve.
And sometimes the best outfits are the ones we never thought we'd wear.
So if there's a trend, style, or silhouette you've been avoiding because you've convinced yourself it's "not for your body," consider this your sign to try it anyway.
You might just discover your new favorite pair of pants.
And if not?
At least you'll know the choice was yours and not a rule someone else made for you.
